Curriculum Vitae –
Throughout my academic and professional career, I have sought to integrate design practice, research, and teaching into a single investigation of how architecture and landscape take form.
Design has always been a way to test an idea of space that responds to the needs and aspirations of a complex contemporary society, linking the act of building to a broader cultural and civic dimension.
My work focuses on contemporary design methods as instruments of experimentation that connect geometry, material, and measure — between the tactile and the visual — in the construction of space understood as both process and form. Teaching has always been an essential part of this process: a shared field of research where design operates both as a method of inquiry and as a collective act of discovery.
This approach has developed through academic research and professional practice — from the theoretical framework of Design/Disegno. Geometry, Measure and Algorithm for Architecture and the City (Maggioli, 2018), to recent large-scale projects. Among these, the masterplan for Euroflora Genova 2025 — winner of the international competition and exhibited in the Italian Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2025 — extends this trajectory toward landscape and installation design, where transparency, matter, and ground act as spatial devices linking architecture, art, and ecology.
I am currently Adjunct Professor at the Politecnico di Milano, and previously served as Senior Lecturer at the University of Cape Town (2013–2018). Over the years I have organised and taken part in international workshops and seminars in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, and have received awards and mentions in architectural and urban design competitions. Through this continuous dialogue between concept and construction, I see design as a means to interpret and transform the contemporary city.
The following pages aim to explain in detail my research trajectory and its interconnection with teaching activity and professional practice.
Summary Statement
1996-2001
During his studies at the Faculty of Architecture of the Politecnico di Milano, Fraschini developed the research interests that would later define his academic and professional trajectory. In particular, he explored the relationship between architectural design and the scale of the contemporary metropolis, focusing on the connections between representation and design processes, and more generally on the theories and techniques of architectural design.
The Erasmus period at Sint Lucas Institute in Brussels (1998–99) exposed him to an international environment and to key influences such as Dutch structuralism and the work of Team 10 and Rem Koolhaas. This experience directly informed his winning proposal for the university competition Cocheras de Metro de Cuatro Caminos (Madrid, 2000, with Stefano Melgrati), which earned him a scholarship for further study at ETSAM Madrid. The project investigated the relationship between architecture, infrastructure, and the city, introducing early experimentation with three-dimensional digital design.
Presented as his M.Arch dissertation (score 98/100, April 2001), this work laid the conceptual foundation for his admission to the Ph.D. School in Architectural and Urban Design at the Politecnico di Milano. Fraschini qualified as a registered architect later that same year.
2002-2008
Fraschini began tutoring in architectural design studios at the Politecnico di Milano while starting his professional practice. In 2003 he was admitted to the Ph.D. Programme in Urban and Architectural Design (18th Cycle). He joined the research group MSLAB (Measure and Scale of the Contemporary City), coordinated by Prof. Ernesto d’Alfonso and later by Prof. Antonella Contin, with whom he would continue to collaborate on a regular basis.
As a member of this group, Fraschini worked on the design of the urban expansion plan for Segovia_Las Lastras and contributed to several publications. As part of the Ph.D. Programme, he carried out a research period at the New York Institute of Technology (2005). From 2004 he served as Adjunct Professor at the Politecnico di Milano. During these years, the first itinerant workshops were organised for students in collaboration with several international academic institutions, including those of Madrid, Istanbul, Sevilla, Cairo, and New York.
During this period, Fraschini co-supervised several M.Arch final dissertations. In collaboration with the University of Insubria and inspired by Frei Otto’s research, the group developed a software tool for the definition and heuristic optimisation of spatial catenaries. The results of this experimentation were presented at international conferences and published in academic journals. The theoretical and technical issues that emerged from this work formed one of the fundamental grounds for his Ph.D. dissertation, discussed with honours in 2007, titled Contemporary Architectural Designing Methods: Manual and Virtual Modeling. Geometrical Techniques of Shape Control.
The thesis consolidated the body of research developed up to that moment and identified specific directions for future work, highlighting the importance of mathematics and geometry as tools for the mental measurement of form throughout the design process, the relationship between the tactile, the visual, and the abstract dimensions, and the dialogue between the scales of the contemporary metropolis, where topography, urban fabrics, and infrastructural networks play a fundamental role. Alongside his research activity, Fraschini gained professional experience working on projects at different scales, both independently and in collaboration with others, and participated in several design competitions.
2009-2013
Fraschini’s professional practice continued to complement his teaching and research activity. He developed projects at different scales, including exhibitions, interior design, renovation of buildings in historical contexts, urban development plans, and landscape and public space design. A close collaboration with the Municipality of Segrate led to the design and realisation of the Museum of the City’s History, accompanied by a publication that collected the results of extensive historical research.
His participation in international design competitions received several awards. The topics addressed in these competitions were closely related to his academic research, representing both opportunities for verification and motivation for further progress. Among them, the first prize for the design of the Ravenna Waterfront promenade and the special mention for Europan 2013 are of particular note.
At the Politecnico di Milano, Fraschini continued teaching within architectural design studios and served as lecturer in charge of the course Contemporary Architectural Design Methods. The course, developed for the final year of the M.Arch programme, combined theory and practice, inviting students to reflect critically on architectural design as a logical, technical, and artistic process. The outcomes of these teaching experiences were published as monographs and within Contin, Antonella, ed. Questo, Metropolitan Architecture. Bologna: Maggioli Editore, 2015.
During these years, Fraschini supervised more than twenty final dissertations at both Bachelor’s and Master’s level. He also co-founded, under the supervision of Prof. Ernesto d’Alfonso, the online magazine Arcduecittà (www.arcduecitta.it), aimed at promoting debate on architecture and design, where he remains part of the editorial team.
2014 – 2020
In 2013 Fraschini was appointed Senior Lecturer at the School of Architecture, Planning and Geomatics of the University of Cape Town. During this period, he devoted himself primarily to teaching and research within a social and spatial context marked by the dynamics of the post-apartheid and post-colonial city. The South African environment provided a fertile ground for reflection on the relationship between society and urban space and for developing design approaches capable of interpreting such complexity.
At the University of Cape Town, Fraschini taught across several programmes, including the Bachelor of Architectural Studies, the M.Arch (Professional), the Master of Urban Design, and the Master of Landscape Architecture. His teaching included design studios, theory and history of architecture and urban design, and the supervision of final dissertations. In the final phase of his appointment, he was particularly involved in the Master of Urban Design, where he explored urban design theories and approaches through the lens of parametric design applied to the post-apartheid city. He also taught digital design techniques to first-year students, an experience that directly extended the research initiated during his Ph.D. on computational and geometric methods.
Over the years in Cape Town, Fraschini consolidated, reorganised, and expanded the theoretical framework of his doctoral research. The outcome of this process was the book Design/Disegno. Geometry, Measure and Algorithm for Architecture and the City (2018). The reflections developed in the book frame parametric design in the wake of humanistic culture (symbolic form). In this context, a design method is proposed that establishes a dialogue between the tactile, the visual, and the abstract (geometric) dimensions in the design of contemporary space.
After completing his academic appointment in South Africa, Fraschini moved to the Middle East, where he contributed to an EU-funded urban regeneration project for a Palestinian refugee camp, implemented by an Italian NGO. During this period, he continued to develop his research on design techniques and participated in international design competitions, including the Rome Olympic Village – Urban and Landscape Design Competition (short-listed project).
2020 – present
After returning to Milan in early 2020, Fraschini resumed his teaching and research activity as Adjunct Professor at the Politecnico di Milano, where he teaches Design Studio 1 in the Master of Science in Building Engineering/Architecture. Since the academic year 2025–26, he teaches in Design Studio 4. He also supervises Master’s theses focused on the relationship between architectural and urban scales in fragile territories such as Cape Town and the West Bank, with ongoing academic collaborations established with the University of Canberra and the University of Cape Town.
The research underpinning this teaching activity has been discussed and published in conference proceedings. In 2021, Fraschini and J. Raxworthy co-authored a paper examining the relationship between urban design theories and parametric design as a tool for evaluating both qualitative and quantitative aspects. Alongside his academic work, he continues his professional practice as an independent architect, participating in competitions and developing projects at different scales.
In autumn 2023, Fraschini, together with Urges Architettura, won the international design competition for Euroflora 2025 Genova. The concept, based on an adaptive layout for the overall exhibition area, includes a series of installations developed for the event. Within this framework, he serves as Chief Architect in charge of design development. For Euroflora, Fraschini also designed the Italian installation for Floralies Internationales France and, in that context, the pavilions for Regione Liguria and Confagricoltura.
The masterplan of Euroflora 2025 is exhibited in the Italian Pavilion at the Biennale Architettura Venezia 2025 – 19th International Architecture Exhibition. The entire professional experience related to Euroflora — a project extending over two years and encompassing the design of more than 80,000 square metres — has been an opportunity to test and verify several key issues explored in his theoretical studies. A strong focus in the concept definition has been devoted to the relationship between architecture, landscape (as inhabited ground), and art as process, where the dialogue between the tactile and the visual dimension plays a pivotal role. The opportunity to develop these ideas at both design and construction level has allowed him to verify, from a technical perspective, the parametric processes explored and described in Design/Disegno. Geometry, Measure and Algorithm for Architecture and the City.
This experience has also reinforced Fraschini’s research interests and expertise in landscape and temporary installations, particularly concerning the relationship between nature and artifice and between built form and human inhabitation. In autumn 2025, Fraschini designed the pavilion for VilleGiardini at the GreenItaly Exhibition in Parma, further extending his exploration of the relationship between architecture, landscape, and the ephemeral dimension of installation design.
